Greetings,
Well some say the world has changed, Iceland is still in a state of shock after what happened in the USA. I will get into that a bit later, life does go on and those lost will not be soon be forgotten. The last few days of August brought unbelievable weather. Who says it rains here all the time. I am getting into the routine of the job, it has its good days and bad, like most jobs. You know how that goes, when you think you might be able to sneak out a little early on a Friday everyone comes with a ton of work that has to finished ASAP. First weekend in September I was out touring with my friend Vilmundur. We visited Strandarkirkja, the Church at Strond in Selvogur. I have never been there before, even though it is not too far from Reykjavik. The history of the place is unbelievable, there has been a church on that same site since before the year 1200. Its origins are folklore, it is believed that a farmer returning with wood from Norway for his house hit very bad weather and felt he would not make it back to land, he prayed and a short time later an angel appeared and guided them to land. Instead of building a house he built a church, at Strond. It has been rebuilt and restored several times but the location remains the same. It is also one of the most wealthiest churches in the country, as many people donate to it for good luck. We also checked out the museum at Eyrarbakki, which is excellent. Drove by Litla Hraun, the jail in Iceland and on to Stokkeseyri. Just past there we visited the rjomabuid of Baugsstadir, in Iceland it is translated as dairy farm but actually it is a creamery, so I know a little bit about them. It is VERY old, all the machines work off a paddlewheel turned by water. The basics are the same as we used in Fraserwood and Eriksdale but allot older. Actually it is even older than the Creamery in Markerville Alberta. It was nice to be able to make the comparison as I visited Markerville a year and a half ago. There was a very nice couple there and they want to visit Canada, potential clients!! We kept cruising and even made it to Gullfoss and Geysir, the weather wasn't the greatest but it is always nice to see those places. Wednesday Sept. 5th was Freshie Day " Busadagur" at school. The kids really get into the celebration, I was told even in the lower grade schools they celebrate the occasion as well. Over Tuesday night the kids had transformed the student area into almost like a Halloween setting. The freshies got to eat hard fish, shark and bacon topped with whipped cream, yummy. Entertainment consisted of a (hilarious)video, done by a group of students, a skit performed by the students. The finally involved a band and thousands of balloons and a march up to Oskurhlid, home of Perlan the domed restaurant. The next day I was astonished at how well the students had cleaned up, it was getting a little messy during their festivities. Sept. 7th I was finally able to get into the health center for my medical for my residence and work permit. It went okay and I delivered it to the Immigration Dept. personally. I see and photocopy many things, well I noticed a group from the school was going to Skogar for an overnight trip, so I asked if I could go along and they said no problem. We left right after school on Friday and travelled by bus to Skogar. We stopped for a pit stop along the way for some snacks as there is no store in Skogar, and for a photo op at Seljandafoss. The students had to hike around the back, I was satisfied to stay in front of the falls, the rainbow was fantastic. The students cooked supper, spaghetti and meat sauce, very tasty. Following supper the students held there own meeting and the teachers and I went for a hike. It was very windy and a bit cool but it was still enjoyable. The evening was topped off with various student activities. There was dancing, singing, plays and even poetry writing. Some good laughs!! The next day while the teachers and students had a meeting I visited Thordur at the museum, he never seems to slow down. It turned out to be a busy day for him, with many groups visiting. I toured the museum with the students and I had to promise Thordur I would visit him again soon. He showed me a guest room right in the museum and said I should use it whenever I can. Before we left for Reykjavik the students were put to even more work, the forestry dept. had thinned some of the skogar (forest) and the students hauled out all the branches and trees that were cut and trimmed from the forest and made a huge pile, which will probably be burnt on New Years Eve. Sunday morning, I packed my bags and moved into my own place. I was able to find a room downtown, my address is now Lokastig 24A Apt #5, 101 Reykjavik. It is only a few houses from Hallgrimskirkja (church) so I am hearing bells allot. Even though I was in a new place the week was progressing normally until Tuesday afternoon, when things started happening in New York and Washington. It was unbelievable. I must admit I got lazy and switched the radio at work to the BBC. I was glued to the radio broadcast, as there was no television reception in the school. Before I went home to watch television it was announced that there will be memorial services at 9pm in most of the churches in Iceland. I attended the service at Hallgrimskirkja with Donica Olafsson from Winnipeg. I must admit I am not very religious but it was something I wanted and felt I should do. The Bishop of Iceland, the Foreign Affairs Minister and the US Ambassador were among the huge crowd in attendance. Part of the service was in English which was nice as there was quite a few foreigners present. I have been getting to work earlier than normal just to check out the net, see how the disaster is being covered in Canada. Iceland is really concerned as we all are and our prayers are with the people affected by the terrible assault. I finally became legal here on the 13th, only a month late. I had to wait for a couple weeks to get my medical done, and then a few days to get my residence and work permit. Bless bless, Kent PS I would like to hear from Canada and the USA, my email here is kentb@mh.is and I also get my Manitoba email at kentb@mts.net |
