December 2002 Postcard

Well, December started as usual with exams and more exams. The days really go by fast when there is a lot to do. Even with lots to do I don’t get all the other usual problems arising so that makes life easier. In between photocopying exams I was able to get my ID replaced and in order. Like I didn’t have enough to do I was also busy trying to sell my house in Winnipeg. Well actually my brother Shawn was doing most of the work but I was involved also.

Villy had some free points to use up so he invited me to a couple movies. We saw Harry Potter 2 and Santa Clause 2. They were both good and the price was right. Every year Norway gives Reykjavik a Christmas tree and there was a lighting the tree celebration on the 8th of Dec.

The weather remained mild and rain did not dampen the Christmas mood. As the exams and work in general were slowing down I shifted over to moving. I had given my notice to move out on the 15th of Dec. On the 11th I was invited out to Grenaskirkja, church for hot chocolate, cookies and Christmas Carols. The Womens Choir of Reykjavik, Kvennakórinn had a evening at the church. It was a great time and I was happy that Villy invited me. His sister is in the choir.

Dec. 13th the Canadian Club and others were invited to the Canadian Embassy for a Christmas party. The party was in the evening for a few hours but it was fantastic. Canadian cheese, ham, apples and of course Moosehead Beer. Please check out the photos: Canadian Embassy Photos. I was in the party mood so I even called up a friend that I worked with at the hotel in the spring to come out with me. Solveig appreciated the call and we had a good time.

Well my last weekend in my room downtown meant that I had to move the remainder of my stuff out on the 15th and I stored most of it in the school, as my new apartment was not quite ready. I ended up staying with and helping a teacher not far from the school. She was heading for the USA for Christmas so I offered to stay in her house until I left. It worked out fine especially since I needed a place to stay anyway.

I am still finding things to establish myself here. On the 20th I bought an insurance policy, it covers my possessions here as well as covers me for travel and medical insurance. I hope I never need it but it is good to be protected. I spent my last couple of days I was in Iceland to buy last minute gifts and goodies. Guðmundur drove me to the airport on the 21st for my flight to Minneapolis. I was surprised there were so few flying from Iceland. There were few people checking in and in the departure area so I did not have to contend with any waiting lines, which was nice. Well I said goodbye to Iceland until next year and I was off.
